AIDS Care:  PAWS for the Cause

The puppy parade at "Team Jackie Lynn's" came in 3rd place for the Top Fundraising Dog Prize at this year's Keeping Pace with AIDS event to benefit AIDS Care!   We hope to do even better next year with your support.  Donations to AIDS Care in Rochester can be made at anytime  at www.acRochester.org.

Our 2011 Sponsored Walkers include:

Cindy's little girl...

Annie (aka Little Orphan Annie)

Annie is grateful to finally have a family of her own.  She has been accepted by the cat community in her home - which was no easy task.  She is hoping to be crowned Miss New York Inner-Beauty Queen so she can continue her work in promoting positive puppy perception worldwide.

Merrilee's pride and joy...

Ben

Ben is quite the community activist.  He has organized doggie sit-ins to demand better quality treats and occasionally incites puppy riots.  His playful side can definitely lead good-boy types astray.  Always the lady's man, Ben is forgiven quite easily and knows it.

Diane's big girl...

Chessie

Chessie spends much of her time feeling alone as the cats in her home want nothing to do with her.  Struggling with the recent realization that she will never be a lap cat, Chessie is still trying to find herself and the meaning of life.  Her journeys have taken her to visit the wise chicken sisters, but they couldn't offer her any meaningful answers.  Diane is hoping a day with other dogs may help poor Chessie find the peace of mind she so desperately seeks.

Linda's princess...

Ginger

Ginger is the definitely an All-American girl-next-door beauty.  She's cute, she's sweet and she has always had a love affair with shoes [which she collects].  Much like Linda, she also has a devilish side which comes shining through should you ever long for a moment of silence.  She's getting prepared for her debut in a "Behind the Scenes -The Life of a Beautiful Blonde" reality TV show and is expecting some media attention at the walk.

We had fun at our walk on Sunday and the dogs had a blast!

Chessie and Ginger tied for the top spot from our store at $110 each in donations, Annie collected $85 and Ben got $80 in donations.

We look forward to next year's walk!

ConKerr Cancer

ConKerr Cancer started when Cindy Kerr’s son was diagnosed with cancer in 2002 and she began making pillowcases to brighten up his hospital room and to put a smile on his face.  He loved it and so she began making pillowcases for other children on the Oncology Unit at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Since then the pillowcase project, A Case for Smiles, has provided nearly 400,000 pillowcases made by thousands of volunteers from across North America and in South Africa.

Pillowcase donations for donation to local hospitals can be dropped off at the store anytime.  When making pillowcases, please keep a few things in mind:

Directions for making the pillowcases can be downloaded directly from their website at www.conkerrcancer.org.  Contact the local chapter coordinator Debra Bartz with further questions at (585) 395-1001.

Erna's Hope

Remembering Zella...

We are saddened to report the loss of our dear friend and fellow sewing, quilting and embroidery enthusiast, Zella Scheg, who was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer a few years ago.  Even after several surgeries, the latest cutting edge treatments and chemotherapy she ultimately lost her battle with the disease on September 18, 2009 at the very young age of 55.  She is survived by her loving husband, and our dear friend, Mike, and their two sons Terence and Philip.

While enduring her medical nightmare, she was overwhelmed to receive a Comfort Bag through the efforts of Erna's Hope, a local movement to educate women about Ovarian Cancer and raise awareness to the illness.

Zella began volunteering her time throughout her ordeal with Erna's Hope assembling the Comfort bags that she was astonished to be given.  She turned to a friend (Jackie) to set up a place to sell the beaded Ovarian Cancer Awareness bracelets, helping to raise the money needed to make the comfort bags given to newly diagnosed patients.

Zella's final wishes were to have friends and family donate to Erna's Hope to continue her work and to continue raising awareness of the importance of early screening for Ovarian Cancer.  Be sure to check out the bracelets the next time you are in the store.  They cost $8.00 each, payable by cash or check only (checks to be made payable to Erna's Hope, Inc.).  For more information about Erna's Hope or to see how you can help, call Kathleen Stellrecht at (585) 865-6941.

Project Linus©

Project Linus is a national organization of volunteer sewers and knitters who make blankets and afghans for children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need. Our store works closely with the local Chapter and is a permanent drop off location for any blanket and fabric donations. The finished blankets are donated to local hospitals (Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong and Rochester General Hospital) and other organizations (such as Alternatives for Battered Women and Cameron House) helping the children in our own community.

Each year these volunteer "blanketeers" work diligently to fill the need for blankets for these children.

All blankets must be of entirely new materials, washable, handmade and in child-friendly colors.  If sewn, the blankets must be at least two layers.  Single layer fleece blankets with a handmade finished edge as well as single layer crocheted and knitted afghans are also accepted.  Wool, upholstery fabric, corduroy, vinyl, polyester double knit and holiday themed fabrics are not accepted.  All donated blankets must measure a minimum of 36" x 36" (the preferred size of blankets is 40" x 60").  It is also important to remember that these blankets are often given to severely ill children so any blankets with strong odors of smoke or chemicals cannot be accepted.  Embellishments such as buttons, tassels or other hanging items are also not accepted.

If you don't have time to make a blanket for the cause, Project Linus is also in need of cash donations.  Checks should be made payable to "Project Linus" and are also being accepted at the store.  Any amount is welcome and greatly appreciated.

A BIG thank you goes to all of the caring individuals who have continually donated blankets each year and for helping our past Make a Blanket Days become a BIG success.  We stopped counting after we hit 1000 blankets, but continue our efforts and to work with Lucille Arthmann, the local Chapter Coordinator for Project Linus to constantly bring in donations.

Ronald McDonald House Tote program

The local Ronald McDonald House is looking for tote bag donations from area sewers and quilters.  The finished totes are given to parents staying at either of the 2 Rochester Ronald McDonald houses whose children are seeking medical attention in our area.  This is an ongoing program and the totes are needed year round.

This is a great way to use up some stash fabric to create the finished totes, which need to measure 16" high and 20" long (measurements do not include handles).  Length of handles, pockets, lining, embellishments, pattern and fabric are all your preference, keeping in mind the fabric should be suitable for the adults.

Finished totes may be dropped off at the store.  For more information on the program, contact Linda Wagner at (585) 442-5437 ext 2200.
